Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Mouse is a landmark in Holocaust recognition and the advancement of serious comics—but his overall achievements are more remarkable and vivid. Art Spiegelman: Disaster Is My Muse traces his origins to the 1960s. As co-creator of the Wacky Pack trading cards; co-founder of the underground comics magazines Arcade (with Bill Griffith) and Row (with wife Françoise Mouly); and In the Shadow of No Tower, his response to 9/11 was inspired by witnessing the attacks from his home in lower Manhattan. His controversial covers for The New Yorker (1993–2003), which prompted the NYPD to picket the magazine’s office; and his public response to a Tennessee school board’s recent ban on Mouse. Spiegelman proves himself a skilled guide through his provocative works, inspired by Spiegelman’s unflinching confrontation with contemporaries (Robert Crumb, Gary Panter) and younger cartoonists (Joe Sacco, Jerry Kraft, Molly Krapple) on personal and traumatic subjects.
